Product Review: OKO Natural Cat Litter!
Nov 01, 2022If you are a cat lover, then you know the only downside of cat ownership is the dreaded litter box!
With so many litters available on the market it can be overwhelming to pick the best ones for your kitty and for your home - because lets face it, no one wants to clean up clay or wood chips all over the house. On top of that, odour control is a huge factor to consider in addition to a safe and non toxic formulation for our four legged loved ones.
With that in mind, I recently tried the OKO cat litter and after about a month and a half trial with it, was pleasantly surprised!
A little info on their product if you have never heard of them before, pulled from their website :
"Oka Cat Litter is a Premium natural cat litter that is relentless at controlling odor, while offering a pleasant, playful texture that's easy on paws and a fresh natural scent reminiscent of the great outdoors"
It claims to be....
- biodegradable and flushable
- dust free
- clumping
- contains no artificial fragrance
In regards to their wood sourcing, they claim.....
"Okocat wood litters are made from a combination of soft woods including pine, fir and spruce, depending on what is available. It is dried at a very high temperature that removes any volatile oils. We maintain long-term relationships with our wood suppliers and perform 3rd party validation testing to ensure consistent manufacturing of wood products with lower than detectable levels of VOC (volatile organic compounds) content. We do not use Cedar in any of our products."
Sounds pretty awesome, right?
Reasons why I bought this....pure curiosity! I ended up trying 2 kinds; the wood chips and the pine (which was more of a finer shaving type of litter). The cost was fair for the amount (but do remember I have just one cat) and I found the transition from our regular pine litter to be easy for Henry (my cat). If you use clay or something finer, it may be best to slowly swap to the shavings version of this litter over the pellets as it may be easier for your cat to adjust.
Overall, I was quite impressed with the quality! The litter essentially works off similar mechanisms as clay based litter minus the cement like quality where you end up scraping the litter box clean until you sweat. The litter clumps when your cat urinates and when they bury their poop it extracts the moisture (and thus, the odour) and clumps it up too. I found it tracked a bit, but not so much that I found it all over my house like some of the clay based litters or walnut ones that are popular on the market.
What I didn’t love.....
I do think this litter can get pricey if you have multiple cats as it is only sold in the 20 pound box and you may run through it a bit with multiples. In addition, the odour control was not as strong as some of my usual faves.
FULL DICLOSURE: we are a household that cleans the litterbox box twice a day, and almost immediately after Henry goes. Cats prefer clean areas to do their business like we do - so if you are not one of those families or you tend to forget to clean it, this litter can get smelly pretty quickly for you
Overall, NOT a bad litter at all considering cost and the ingredients. I would totally recommend the wood chips over the finer pine litter but both are great options if you are looking to swap your cat to a more natural, environmentally friendly litter!
- Happy Training!
